In his Hawaii painting, Thomas Deir captured the beauty of the majestic Koolau mountains and a tiny island in Oahu’s Kaneohe Bay. The island got its name, “Chinaman’s Hat”, because its shape resembles a type of hat worn by the Chinese in the rice fields.

Deir’s inspiration and ideal perspective for the original painting came from the view he had while flying an ultralight seaplane around Kaneohe Bay.
