This project was a 2-part perspective project using a revolutionary paint that the artist invented called Genesis Artist Colors. This paint never dries until it is heated, and is non-toxic and approved for school use.
The first 10 ft. x 3 1/2 ft. painting was painted in 10 days by 64 - 4th graders, depicting the Kaelepulu Endangered Bird Sanctuary, which the children were studying at the time.
The perspective is from Enchanted Lakes' edge where the birds gather just 2 blocks from the school. The boat is a symbol of the children's journey, with their school mascot, the endangered Hawaiian Stilt, or "Kolea" leading the way. The Kolea symbolizes their teachers, while the Hawaiian Gallinule, or "Alae ÔUla" sits on the right foreground bank, symbolizing the watchful eye of the parents and faculty at Enchanted Lakes Elementary School.
The second painting is the same size and compliments the other with a perspective that is the opposite; from behind the mountain looking towards the Bird Sanctuary and Enchanted Lakes Elementary, with the ocean in the background and the evening sky casting a rainbow on the foreground clouds as the Hawaiian Owl, or "Pueo" flies towards you. The Pueo is a symbol of wisdom and good luck. The artist went up in a helicopter to get the correct perspective and photographs to compose this painting.
This second painting was painted in 10 days by 67 - 6th graders, who will be leaving the school for 7th grade.
These paintings hang in the library's 2 walls reminding the children of the value of preserving endangered species, and the beauty of their learning and living environment.
When the whole school paints a mural, each child paints once for 30-45 minutes, so they only learn technique such as brushing, blending, masking, etc.
When a grade level paints instead of the whole school, they learn technique in addition to the process. The child comes in every day for 5-10 days. This is far more valuable, as the child can go from here and apply this process to other forms of visual art. In other words, they know from experience the process of creating a work of art Ð from concept, to composition, to execution.
